The Aquaflosser is a high tech personal hygiene appliance that sprays a pulsating jet of water, which can be used for a regular daily flossing session as well as for more complicated cleaning of implants braces and crowns.

As with many products there are arguments from both sides. A dental jet with similar statistics to the Aquaflosser has numerous studies proving that a dental jet is not only as effective as manual flossing but is even more effective than manual flossing when it comes to reducing bleeding of the gums and plaque removal when using the orthodontic / interdental jet tip. Clinical study results (the dental jet used in this clinical trial was not the Aquaflosser however the Aquaflosser pulses and pressures are comparable to the product used in this trial).
Statistics show that more than 70% of people do not floss at all. This is because it is a rather tedious task.Use of the Aquaflosser makes this chore so easy that it is easier to comply.
Plaque results from bacteria feeding off residual food debris left mainly behind in the interdental spaces between teeth where brushing does not reach. The Aquaflosser removes this debris completely with it’s powerful jet. With the food debris gone it is reasonable to assume that there is no food for the bacteria to feed on and thus the assumption that plaque build up is less likely.
Another beneficial factor is that the pulsating jet of water penetrates below the gum line which flushes away disease causing bacteria. Since the oral cavity is the main entrance to the body a lower bad bacteria count is good for overall health.
In conclusion we are suggesting that the Aquaflosser is a great adjunct to manual flossing if a person flosses already but is especially beneficial to the person who does not use floss at all. To a person who does not floss at all it will make the world of difference.

I have braces (orthodontics). Can the Aquaflosser damage them? |

On the contrary. The Aquaflosser has an orthodontic tip designed especially to clean braces.
One of the biggest downfalls of braces is that it is difficult to thread floss through them. They also tend to be natural food traps. With regular use of the Aquaflosser there is minimal chance that there will be white plaque spots which are a regular occurrence when braces are removed and have not been properly cared for. The Aquaflosser also assures fresher breath since the interdental spaces are free of rotting food debris.

The Aquaflosser is perfect for cleaning crowns, bridges and implants. The Aquaflosser uses water to clean which is able to flush where floss cannot reach. Not cleaning the areas properly can result in serious infection of the gums. The Aquaflosser flushes away infection causing bacteria keeping your implants, crowns and bridges clean and your gums healthy. Consider an email received recently from one of our customers from Sea Point, Cape Town:
Dear Sirs,
I would like to commend you on your wonderful product “Aquaflosser”. I had difficulty cleaning under a bridge in my mouth with super floss. The result was that the gum became infected resulting in bleeding.
My dental hygienist recommended I try the Aquaflosser. Three months later when I visited her the gum had completely healed. Your Aquaflosser was indeed a blessing.
I use it twice a day, adding a little mouthwash which is so refreshing.
Yours sincerely,
Gerald Shap.

How long should I charge my Aquaflosser after the first charge and how long will a charge last? |

You should theoretically charge your unit for 16 hours every time you charge it. It is not however imperative that you do this. It is sufficient to charge your unit overnight after use and it will be fully charged by morning use. It is also not possible to overcharge it so longer than 16 hours is also fine. If your battery is flat it is also fine to do a quick charge however the charge will not last the maximum time.
When fully charged the running time should be approximately 15 minutes. You will however notice a gradual drop in pressure especially towards the end of the charge. It is not necessary to let the unit run completely flat before recharging. The battery charge cycle is 500 cycles.

As with any item a well maintained unit will last longer than one that is not maintained.
- Always make sure that the charging plug as well as the unit plug are clean and dry before plugging in to charge.
- To keep the reservoir clean run one reservoir full of white vinegar through once a month. This will reduce calcium build up as well as kill any bacteria build up that may happen in the reservoir. Regular use of mouthwash does the same trick.
- Orthodontic/interdental jets should be replaced once every 3 months. 3 Packs of these items are available in retail stores or online.
- Make sure that you dry your unit after every use and keep it clean at all times. Remember that it is a hygiene product so a clean unit means less chance of any bacteria build up. The base of the jet tipis an area that is especially important to keep clean.

It is fine to use most mouthwashes in the unit however oil based mouthwash (Dentyl by G.U.M) clogs up the pipes and should be avoided. It is also fine to use a saline solution but it should be premixed and the unit should be flushed out with a full reservoir of clean warm water after each use to avoid crystallisation inside the pipes. Medicinal rinses are also safe like chlorhexadrine but should be used under consultation with your dental professional.

There is a possibility that the aquaflosser will leak on the first use.
The reason for this is that the nylon piston which causes the water pulsation sometimes shrinks when it is not in contact with water. If you do experience this problem you will notice that the problem will resolve itself within 24 hours after the piston has been in contact with water. |

Which is the high pressure and which is the low pressure jet tip? |

If you look closely at the front of the jet tip one hole is bigger than the other. This allows more water through and thus is the lower pressure tip.

The biggest mistake people make when using the Aquaflosser is to try and look in the mirror. The idea is to first put the jet tip in the mouth before switching the unit on and to face down into the basin. This will prevent any splashing. Feel your way around the mouth as opposed to seeing. When switched on in the mouth move the jet tip along the gumline approximately 1mm away from the teeth. Pause for approximately 4 seconds at each interdental space slightly rotating the tip from the one tooth to the other and slightly angling up and down to make sure the whole space is cleaned. A proper cleaning will take around 2 full reservoirs.

You will find that warm water is far more comfortable to use than cold water. It is totally safe to do so. |
